Agreement for academic and research collaboration between IAS and CUS
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen,
I am very happy to have a chance to see so many international Big Shots today.
It is indeed my pleasure to sign the Agreement for academic and research collaboration between the Institute of Advanced Studies and the Center for Urban Studies. On this special occasion, I would like to say a few words about our Center for Urban Studies.
TMU was established in 1949 under the sponsorship of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. In this sense TMU is the nearest equivalent of the City University of New York. Our Center for Urban Studies started its activities in 1977 so that it is 24 years old now.
In Japan, our Center for Urban Studies is really a unique institute, with its specialization in interdisciplinary research on urban problems and policy.
Our Center has been pursuing local and regional studies which make contributions to Tokyo and its citizens. At the same time we widely open the doors to the world and pursue so-called glocal studies. Our basic attitude is to think globally and act locally. Through these efforts we hope to present a new vision for cities in the new century.
Once again, I am very happy to co-operate with the Institute of Advanced Studies in order to make a scientific contribution to the solution of urban problems.
I hope that both institutes will be able to make fruitful cooperation in the future.
